RJ Crosby is the Branch Manager of Benchmark’s retail locations in Scottsdale and Las Vegas, as well as Operations for the Colorado Springs Branches. “Over 12 years, I took a couple hard looks in regards to joining Benchmark but the timing was never right,” said Crosby. “Then, finally, the timing was right and I made the best decision of my 19 year mortgage career!
Little did I know that joining Benchmark in January 2020 would give our team a short window of time to get integrated into the Benchmark systems before the start of the COVD-19 pandemic in March which would result in a massive refi boom and housing boom!”
During the time, Steve Gosson was assigned to be the conventional underwriter for RJ’s branches.
“It was like our team and Steven Gosson got into a lifeboat together at the perfect time to make it through the storm,” said Crosby. “We rode out the refi boom and housing boom created by the impacts of COVID and it was an awesome year from a business perspective.
It was like we had been through battle together as we fought through the incredible volume of mortgage originators in 2020, but had not had time to slow down and meet in person.”
In a post vaccine world and with business stabilizing in early 2021, Crosby knew his team wanted to meet Steve in person, so he invited him and his wife to Scottsdale. The whole team mingled, in personal and professional capacities, to ensure Steve and his wife felt the love.
“One of the many things that I appreciate about Steve is that he frequently calls me at the end of the month just to say thank you for all we do,” Crosby said. “He reminds me that our team is literally putting food on his family’s dinner table, and that he appreciates my team’s hard work on the origination side of the business.”
Crosby shared that Steve Gosson has been a loan originator and a processor in a branch during his career in the industry and this makes a big difference. “He understands these roles, and wants to elevate the work being done by everyone in the process,” said Crosby.
One of Benchmark’s five core values is Relationships. “This is key,” said Crosby. “It’s why Steve has been promoted multiple times and is enjoying his 15th year with the company.”
RJ Crosby came on board in January 2020, just as Covid was becoming a household name, and our industry was on the precipice of historical volume with extremely low rates. I was assigned to underwrite for his branch, and once we joined forces, I immediately knew RJ was of a very high caliber. Through the whirlwind of 2020, we always kept communication fluid and worked together as challenges arose, which strengthened the newly formed foundation of our business relationship, but also produced an amazing friendship along the way. Last month, RJ was kind enough to host Michelle and I in Scottsdale for our first Meet the Team after 18 months in the trenches together. It was like visiting family, which is the character of RJ and his team, and what makes working with them so special.
