Shawn Foster, Benchmark’s Quality Control Manager, is praising Kelly Gibson, Underwriting Support Team Lead, and Taylor White, Underwriting Support Specialist, because “they protect Benchmark day in and day out.”

More recently, Kelly and Taylor were working to verify a pre-closing employment status for a borrower. While investigating employment status, a challenge arose due to lack of information and legitimacy. The underwriting supporters sought the assistance of Shawn Foster for guidance on how to research and legitimize this file. For context, Foster used to be a fraud investigator for Fannie Mae, so she is contacted often for this “sort of thing.”

In this particular case, they were trying to verify the borrower’s employment out of Costa Rica, so US databases were unhelpful, said Foster. “They called me because they weren’t comfortable confirming this as it was a strange circumstance, and rare occurrence.”

Foster pulled all the extra information she could, and helped Kelly and Taylor verify and bring clarity, legitimizing the borrower.

“Underwriting can be a thankless job,” said Foster. “This department’s hard work and tenacity can sometimes be taken for granted.”

Foster praises Kelly and Taylor, because they didn’t “let this one slide” due to the extra effort needed to confirm information. “We’re on the hook for the loan if there are flags,” said Foster. “They ensure that each loan that lands on their desks are the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

“I was very impressed with the way they resolved this.”

Thank you so much for including us in this month’s newsletter. I remember this loan it was a crazy one! I’m not sure how we got this one to work, but we did. Our team handles the final verifications of employment before funding. Normally what our underwriters require for proof of employment are in alignment with what our investors require, and the documentation that is in the file is sufficient for us. In this case, they weren’t. The borrower was self-employed and all our traditional and nontraditional methods of employment verification for him were failing. His company was in another country, and everything kept returning with no results. Right when I was ready to give up everything just came together, the stroke of genius Kelly is referring to. Some of these self-employed files require us to get creative, but never at this level.

I appreciate Shawn, Becky, and Jim. I love our UW Support team. I honestly don’t know how I’d make it through the day without talking to them.

UW Support completes the final verification of employment for every loan. We had a very sticky self employed file, and it was a company in another country. Not very much about it online, but somehow we found a website that verified the borrower’s contract number with the city. I guess you could say that we had stroke of genius lol. Taylor and I were just happy to make this one work! It’s that feeling when you are working a puzzle and you find that piece that you have been looking for so long.
